Ways to Not Overindulge During this Holiday Season

If you’re like me, starting around Thanksgiving it becomes very difficult to celebrate the holidays without overindulging and gaining weight.  So here are a few ways to help you manage your way through the holiday season without packing on those extra pounds.

Don’t Skip Meals
People make the mistake of skipping meals during the day leaving you hungry by the time the party begins.  This will only lead you to absolutely destroy the appetizers, buffet and dessert tables.
What to do:
•    Start with a good breakfast and eat smaller meals during the day so you don’t show up hungry.
•    Choose wisely when you do sit down to eat dinner.  Start with a soup (nothing creamy or heavy). Fill the majority of your plate with salad, veggies and choose a light dressing or just vinegar and lemon juice.

Keep Busy
If you’re occupied with activities, you’re not eating.
•    Indoor games such as playing cards or board games.
•    Outdoor activities such as sledding, building a snow man or having a snowball fight.
•    Simply enjoying your company and conversing with new and old friends can help you stay away from that appetizer table.
•    Chewing gum may not help curb your appetite but it will at least keep your mouth busy.
These are all good ways to stay busy and even burn calories during the holiday season.

Eat until You’re Satisfied
Easier said than done, I know.  But sometimes just slowing down when you’re eating and pausing before having the next course can help you feel fuller faster and avoid that dreaded so stuffed “I need a nap” feeling for the rest of the evening.

Bring Your Own Side Dish or Dessert
The internet is full of healthy and easy recipes for you to choose from.  This way there is at least one dish that fits into your healthy meal plan.

Alcohol Consumption
It is perfectly ok to raise your glass during the holidays but it is important take into account the amount you are consuming.  Drinks such as eggnog are high in calories and sugar.
•    Try using diet or club soda if mixed drinks are your beverage of choice
•    Choose a light beer
•    Alternating between your alcoholic beverage and water during the evening is always a good idea

The holidays are not the best time of the year to start a new diet or worry about losing weight. Instead be realistic, just maintaining your current weight and enjoying this time of the year with family and friends is a win!

Have a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!
