With the British Open just finishing last week at St Andrews, weekend hackers around the globe imagine taking a 'trip of a lifetime' to Scotland to play the most famous courses in the world. If you are one of the lucky few who manage to make this dream a reality, here are a few tips as you get ready to go.
1. Pack appropriate clothing. It sounds simple enough, but you would be amazed at what some people will bring. Shorts are completely unnecessary. While you may be fortunate enough to get a day warm enough that you could wear shorts, it will never be so hot that you will be uncomfortable without them. Plan to wear multiple layers as the weather can change quite suddenly and dramatically.
2. High quality rain gear and waterproof golf shoes (two pairs) are an absolute must. Rain gloves are also likely to be used on multiple occasions. Golf umbrellas are practically worthless do to the high winds and therefore not worth bringing on the trip. If you normally wear eyeglasses when playing, consider trying contact lenses as they won't constantly need to be wiped when it rains.
3. There are no golf carts. Plan to bring a lightweight golf bag that can be easily carried or pulled on a "trolley" (pull cart) which are available for rent. Also, consider leaving seldom used clubs at home to lessen the weight.
4. Caddies are helpful but also rather expensive ($70-100). Consider buying a "stroke saver" yardage book for a few pounds in the pro shop prior to the round.
5. Bring a small bag of medical supplies. Include regular daily prescriptions and well as possible as-needed medications such as Motrin or Tylenol. Liquid bandage is helpful to have for both blisters or minor cuts and abrasions.
6. Play "ready golf." Rounds in Scotland are designed to take less than four hours.
7. There are no beverage carts in Scotland. Plan to bring a water bottle and possibly and light snack. Be careful not to drink too much water, as bathrooms and trees are both rather scarce on Scottish courses.
