HEALTH
Some people may think getting into heart healthy shape means treacherous exercise, but being heart-healthy can actually be quite fun! The heart-healthy benefits of exercise don’t require a huge commitment and long hours in the gym. In honor of February being American Heart Health Month, here are 4 fitness tips to get your heart healthy and happy.
1) Do the Activities you Love
Don’t think of exercise only as something you have to do in the gym. Activities such as walking, dancing in your living room, bowling and even cleaning your house can count as exercise too! The easiest thing to do is sit down and make a list of activities you do and find a way to make at least one of them a part of your daily routine. Get in the habit of being fit and try new activities such as a group exercise class. You might just find a new activity you like!
2) The Power of 10
Yes, you can get heart-health benefits from just 10 minute bouts of activity! Walking three times a day for ten minutes has been shown to lower blood pressure more effectively than a 30 minute walk. An easy way to squeeze in exercise is to walk before work, over lunch and after dinner.
3) De-stress with Exercise
Kicking stress to the curb can be done effectively with exercise. Stress can be critical to heart health so find exercises that appeal to you and make you feel good will help you to de-stress. Try workouts such as yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi. These exercises are also good for helping with mind-body connection.
4) Have a Healthy Heart with a Healthy Diet
Working out is only part of the heart health equation. Choose a nutritious diet that is rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This will in turn give you the energy needed to power through your workouts and everyday life.
