Spinal pain is an extremely common occurrence, in fact, according to the American Spinal Decompression Association it affects at least 80% of us some time in our lives. Following preventative measures will significantly decrease your chances of back injury
When performing daily activities and tasks, there is nothing more important than using proper body mechanics. This is one of the first steps for taking preventative measures.
Here are some other important preventative tips to help care for your spine.
Stay Active- Exercising regularly not only helps you maintain a healthy weight, it also aides in losing excess weight. Carrying additional weight can damage and over-stress muscles, ligaments, and tendons close to your spine. Your exercise routine should target both your low back and neck, combining strengthening, aerobic activities and proper stretching.
Hydration is Key- Due to lack of hydration, our intervertebral located between each vertebral body will begin to shrink. As disc structures becomes smaller due to lack of hydration this not only increases pain levels but could also escalate your chances of injury due to potential bulging or rupture. The cushions for our spine are provided by discs and if they dissipate, we become extremely vulnerable to injuries.
Get your Sleep- Sleeping properly is key to spinal health. Sleeping on your side will ensure proper alignment verses sleeping on your side which will cause strain and pressure. Make sure to rotate your mattress several times per year so it wears evenly. Sleep is extremely important because it helps the body repair and recover after a long day.
Lift Correctly- Always be sure to use proper body mechanics while lifting heavy objects. Twisting or lifting improperly could damage your spine. Keep the object close to your body and bend at the knees. It is important to also keep your spine straight. Ask for help if what you’re lifting is too heavy.
Listen to your body- Having occasional back pain is common, but it could also be an indicator of a serious problem. Listen to your body! If you disregard the pain, it could potentially worsen your spine leading to serious problems.
