"Sit up straight!" Is it really that important? Yes!
Poor posture is very common in patients coming to us with headaches, neck pain, shoulder complaints, and back problems. Our bodies fatigue less and move best when normal spinal curves are maintained. Poor posture is often a bad habit. That means it can be corrected. These ideas will get you started.
In sitting, pretend a string is attached to your sternum, or breastbone, and is being pulled gently toward the ceiling about 1/2 inch or so. This should feel comfortable. Notice that your head is better aligned over your neck and that your shoulders are less rounded.
Now arrange your sitting environment to maintain this improved posture. Rest your cell phone, tablet, or book on the table or on a stack of pillows in your lap. Wear proper reading glasses, enlarge the print size, or adjust your lighting as necessary. You may need to put a firm cushion behind your back. Have a brick of paper under your feet if they don't reach the floor.
Although these tips are for sitting, also correct your alignment and spinal curves when reclining, standing, or walking. Make small changes. Be persistent. And do sit up straight!
