The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, or ACL, is one of four ligaments that provides stabilization to the knee. ACL tears are a very common type of knee injury, affecting more than 200,000 individuals in the United States each year. A torn ACL often results from knee movements that involve twisting or sudden stops and changes in direction.

You may hear or feel a “pop” in the knee joint when the injury occurs. The knee may buckle, feel unstable, or become unable to your weight during movement. ACL tears frequently cause pain and swelling in the back or the outside of the knee. Pain and inflammation may limit movement of the joint and hinder walking or other activities. If you suspect you could have an ACL tear or other serious knee injury, contact an orthopedic physician for an examination as soon as possible.
