5 Tips for Avoiding Golf Injuries

 

4.1.1Now that summer is upon us, it’s the perfect time for a nice game of golf. It is both challenging and exhilarating which allows for a great time. Although it may seem like a simple sport, there are certain precautions that must be taken in order to avoid any hazardous events. While it may seem unlikely, injuries can commonly occur, here are some tips provided by Blackstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in order to avoid any mishaps:

1. Always remember to stretch

As you swing your golf club, several body parts are stretched in a manner in which the body is not originally accustomed to. The force of the swing can put a tremendous amount of pressure on your back and joints, therefore causing pain in your shoulders, back, elbows, knees, hands and wrists. By stretching there is a smaller chance of gaining these injuries, although it may not be completely avoidable.

2. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

An average game of golf tends to be in the four hour range. By covering up and protecting your exposed skin, your time at the golf course as well as your time after you leave will be more enjoyable and less painful.

3. What to keep in mind while on the course

Be aware of your surroundings. Knowing where all of the players are located is a key thing to keep in mind. Even though you are most likely only playing with a handful of people, there are still other groups present on the golf course. By being aware of your surroundings, injuries such as golf clubs to the face or golf balls to the head can be easily avoided, whether you are the one swinging or just a simple bystander.

No matter how many precautions you take, unforeseen events are still likely to occur. Once the golf ball has been hit, if it so happens to be going in the direction of other players on the course, by yelling the word “fore” it informs golfers that the ball is coming in their direction so they should take cover. Under a tree or by a golf cart are the best choices, but if taking cover in those locations is not possible, covering your face and eyes with your arms is second best.

4. Avoid playing in a thunderstorm

Not playing in a thunderstorm may seem like common sense, but if the weather changes as you are on the course, take precautions and go inside. Since playing golf involves iron clubs, they are very likely to attract lightning. Although quitting the game halfway through may seem annoying, it is better to be safe then sorry.

If it so happens that you are caught in the middle of a storm and have no time to reach the clubhouse, avoid seeking cover under trees or by the water, they are major conductors of lightning. Try to find a close walled room, like a bathroom or designated lightning shelter.

5. Golf cart etiquette

If you are driving a golf cart, make sure you know all of the rules.

You must be a licensed driver or accompanied by an adult in order to avoid any accidents. It is not difficult, but if they are not driven properly issues may arise.  Make sure you keep on the cart paths and avoid bumpy terrains. Avoid speeding and keep in mind that there may be other carts driving on the same path.

A few other reminders

-Remember you are not the only one on the course. Pace yourself. Everyone plays at different speeds so be mindful of your surroundings. Avoid pressuring the other players or moving ahead into other groups. If necessary, you may ask a course marshall to politely ask the the slower players to speed up their game so there is no build up on the course.

-Make sure you wear the proper attire. Golf shoes will provide better traction on the course in comparison to regular sneakers and will help you avoid slipping while you swing. Shoes with plastic spikes as opposed to metal ones are highly recommended due to the fact that most places do not allow them.

Gloves are essential when it comes to avoiding blisters on your hands on a warm summer day. Without gloves, sweaty palms are common therefore making it harder to grip the club. Depending on your preference, you can choose to wear both gloves or just one.
