If you have diabetes, it’s important to keep it under control to prevent future problems with your heart, nerves, and feet. Here are some tips from Blackstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine on what you can do right now.

Manage your weight- Losing extra pounds and maintaining a healthy weight will help to control blood sugar levels. Consult a fitness trainer, dietitian, or doctor to get started on a plan that will work for you.

Check blood sugar levels at least twice a day- Keep your blood sugar range within the recommended levels by your doctor. Write down your progress and note what food affects your levels. This, overall, will keep your body’s health in good order.

Keep moving- Exercising 30 minutes a day 5 days a week is helpful for maintaining a healthy weight. It also helps to cut stress and lower blood pressure.

Protect your feet- Keep the blood flowing to your feet. Don’t cross your legs for long periods of time and when sitting, make sure to wiggle your toes and move your ankles several times a day. If your foot problems persist, make sure to contact your doctor.

Sleep well- Sleep deprivation can cause you to eat more, which means you can put more weight on. People with diabetes that get enough sleep will often have healthier eating habits as well as improved blood sugar levels.

See your doctor- Checking with your doctor will help to make sure you are in check with your health. Make sure you get a complete checkup at least once a year and communicate with your doctor as often as possible. If you experience any joint or muscle pains, contact an orthopedic specialist for these complications.
