Suffering from chronic hip pain can feel as though your entire life has come to a halt. After all, the hipbone is a very important part of the human body which allows us to walk, run, stand, or dance. Chronic hip pain takes a toll on you day-to-day activities, leaving you unable to do the things you once loved. We have had numerous patients in our Rhode Island and Massachusetts offices face the daunting issues of hip pain.

The first step to beating chronic hip pain is finding its source. Here are the most common causes of chronic hip pain.

Osteoarthritis

One of the most common forms of arthritis is osteoarthritis. According to Arthritis Today, over 27 million people in America suffer from osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage in the hip to break down, allowing the bones to rub together resulting in stiffness, pain, and loss of movement. Osteoarthritis can unfortunately effect other joints in the body such as the knee.

Bursitis

Bursa is the fluid-filled sac which acts to cushion points between the bones, tendons, and muscles. Bursa is located throughout the whole body including the hips. When overworked or injured, bursa can become extremely painful and turn into a condition known as bursitis.

Tendinitis

Tendons are the fibrous structure that connect muscles to the bone. Immense pain can occur when tendons in the hip become inflamed, irritated or swollen. Overuse or injury of the tendons is what can cause tendinitis. Elasticity in the tendon is lost as you age.

Dislocation

When the ends of the bones become forced from their normal position, this a sign that the hip joint is dislocated. This usually occurs after a blunt force trauma such as an automobile accident or sports injury. A hip dislocations is extremely painful and makes it nearly impossible to walk. Seek medical attention immediately if you feel you have a dislocated hip.

Hip Labral Tear

A ring of cartilage called the labrum is what rims the socket of your hip. The purpose it serves is to hold the ball of the thighbone in the hip’s socket firmly. Painful tears in the labrum can be cause by hereditary conditions, repetitive motions, and trauma.
