MENISCUS TEAR
Part of preparing for surgery is understanding what will happen during the procedure, as well as what to expect before, during, and after surgery.
While there is always room for the unexpected, here are some of the basics to give you a quick understanding of meniscus tear surgery.
Before: Getting Ready for Surgery
The meniscus is a rubbery piece of cartilage that cushions your knee. Both of your knees have two menisci that help stabilize the knee joint, and help to absorb some of the shock caused by walking, running, or playing sports.
If you have injured your knee, you may require knee cartilage repair surgery. Depending on the extent of the tear, your doctor might recommend that you have surgery to remove the torn cartilage, or repair it. Prior to surgery, you might have an appointment for a physical exam to ensure you are healthy enough for surgery. You might also be given a prescription to be filled. You should also arrange for transportation both to and from your appointment.
During: Surgery
Arthroscopic surgery will be performed to see if your surgeon can repair the meniscus injury. If the surgeon can see the tear with an arthroscope, he or she will be able to determine whether it is best to repair or remove the meniscus. If it can be repaired, another incision will be made, and the surgeon will repair the meniscus by suturing the torn pieces back into place.
If a partial removal is required, the torn part of the meniscus will be removed, and the healthy tissue will be left intact. If the tear cannot be repaired, then removal of the entire meniscus may be necessary.
After: Road to Recovery
Depending on the surgery, your surgeon may recommend a period of immobilization for your knee, for two weeks after surgery. This may be followed by two weeks of limited activity. Physical therapy is also an important part of the recovery process. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s rehabilitation plan to help facilitate optimum healing.
