How to Stay Active with Back Pain

Staying active can help to relieve certain types of back pain.

Back pain can be frustrating and debilitating, and is something that affects both young and old alike.

Whether you are recovering from surgery or experiencing back pain, your natural response may be to rest. But while rest is recommended in some cases, it isn’t always the best option. In some cases, too much rest can undermine healing.

When done in a controlled, safe manner, active back exercises can help to distribute nutrients to the disc space and soft tissues in the back, helping to keep the muscles, ligaments, and joints healthy. In some cases, certain types of exercise –such as aerobics, can help to reduce back pain.

If you are experiencing back pain, you may need some exercises that are back-friendly. Here are some exercises that are generally considered safe and beneficial for those who are experiencing back pain.

  • Stretches

Stretches can be extremely beneficial for alleviating back pain, and preventing the muscles from becoming stiff. Stretches for back pain relief.

  • Swimming

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise that is especially ideal for those who are experiencing back pain. Swimming takes the pressure off of the back while proving an excellent form of low-impact exercise.

  • Pilates

Pilates is another great exercise that can help to relieve back pain. Pilates exercises have a focus on strengthening the core and improving flexibility –which can help to relieve certain types of back pain.

  • Walking

A simple exercise, walking has been shown to help relieve certain cases of back pain. For some back conditions though, walking will cause too much pain. In these cases, water therapy may provide a better alternative.

  • Cycling

Cycling, or riding a stationary bike, is a great form of exercise for those who are suffering from back pain. Cycling is a much better option than running for those who are experiencing back pain since it’s low impact –and puts minimal stress on the back.

These exercises are considered beneficial for those who are suffering from back pain, but it’s a good idea to have your doctor or a physical therapist show you exercises that are appropriate to do in your condition.

While keeping active can be difficult –especially if you are suffering from back pain, staying active is important for your overall health –and in some cases can even help to reduce back pain. With your doctor’s permission –you should try to stay as active as possible.
