PHYSICAL THERAPY
Experiencing dizziness or nausea? Does it happen when you turn your head to one side? What about rolling over or sitting up in bed? Picking something up from the floor? If you’ve been answering yes to any of these questions, you may be experiencing common signs of BBPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), otherwise known as, Vertigo.
Vertigo occurs when small crystals in the inner ear canals become out of place causing feelings of lightheadedness or as if the room is spinning.
You have answered yes to the above questions, so what next? First, we suggest you call your primary care physician to set up an appointment and discuss the symptoms you are experiencing to determine the nature of the issue. Once determined, your doctor will likely recommend visiting a Physical Therapist.
That is where PT’s come in! First, a Physical Therapist will perform a formal evaluation, including your current history of the issue, as well as a series of tests to determine the location of the crystals. The inner ear is comprised of three different canals, posterior, anterior and horizontal. These three canals are all potential areas to where the crystals can be displaced. Each canal will present a little different than the next. A PT can determine the location of the crystals through observation of abnormal jumping movements in both eyes during the testing period.
Once the PT has determined where the crystals have moved to, they will begin with repositioning maneuvers. These maneuvers are simple, non-invasive and easy to administer. They include turning the head and body while lying on your back, side, and stomach. Extensive research has been proven behind the efficacy of repositioning maneuvers in treating Vertigo in as quickly as one or two physical therapy appointments!
If you believe you have been experiencing similar symptoms as above, do not hesitate calling your primary care provider, so they can direct you to the appropriate health care professional!
