Patient safety is essential to deliver the best results in patient care. Yet in the United States, many patients are affected by a series of processes and decisions that result in poor results and even harm. This week, the Ortho RI South County Division completed our High Reliability Organization (HRO) training, a program adopted by South County Hospital with 4 other Rhode Island hospitals. The program takes cues from other trades such as the airline industry, where failure can produce disastrous outcomes. The program is designed to make our hospital and outpatient clinics safer, and deliver the best outcomes. As a High Reliability Organization, this training is now required for all clinical and non-clinical staff at South County Hospital.
By changing the culture of how we think about, talk about, and respond to patient safety, healthcare professionals can create a healthcare system that is more effective for patients and their families. The surgeons, physician assistants and nurse practitioners at Ortho RI consider patient safety our top concern, and are proud to partner with South County Hospital in their efforts to lead change in Rhode Island healthcare.
