With demand for expert orthopedic care on the rise, Ortho Rhode Island surgeons continue to provide new opportunities to help patients get back to their lives. This month, Dr. Ian Madom completed a one-level anterior cervical discectomy with fusion (ACDF) at the Ortho RI Surgery Center, the first ever spine surgery to be performed there.
The Ortho RI Surgery Center is an outpatient facility, which means all patients return home the day of their procedures. Dr. Madom’s milestone ACDF surgery is the latest example of the forward-thinking care provided by Ortho Rhode Island’s spine team, which focuses on returning patients with back and neck pain to their daily activities with a minimally invasive approach.
ACDF is employed when a patient has at least one vertebral disc that has herniated or has begun degenerating, resulting in pain and weakness that can extend into the arms or hands. This treatment is recommended after more conservative approaches have proven ineffective at addressing the patient’s symptoms. The spinal fusion performed in an ACDF helps the bone tissue of vertebrae to grow together, or fuse, stabilizing the spine. In some cases, instrumentation such as metal plates, rods, or screws are utilized to aid the fusion process.
With spine surgeries like this becoming available on an outpatient basis thanks to Dr. Madom and the rest of Ortho Rhode Island’s spine team, patients will have more opportunity to return to what matters most to them.
