Foot and Ankle

With 26 bones and 33 joints, our feet are possibly the most complex part of our musculoskeletal system. In addition, the ankle has three bones that allow for the up/down and side to side motion of the feet. Muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the region allow for the complex movements needed for motion and balance.

Injury, congenital abnormalities, infection, arthritis, and even improper, narrow footwear can cause complex foot and ankle pain that is debilitating for everyday life. Proper treatment can restore or improve function and stability.

Treatment options vary by patient, severity of injury and diagnosis and can range from conservative physical therapy to joint replacement surgery. Reconstructive surgical procedures are complex and can involve repairing or transferring tendons, implanting joints or fusing bones.
