Halloween is full of hands-on activities, one of them specifically being pumpkin carving. Carving out spooky jack-o-lanterns has become a tradition amongst many families but could also put a strain on your hands, especially for those suffering from arthritis. Here are some tips from Blackstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine on how to keep your hands safe from orthopedic injury while carving your festive pumpkins.
Use tools specifically for pumpkin carving- Kits for pumpkin-carving are designed with smaller serrated pumpkin saws which work better to cut pumpkin flesh without getting stuck. Knives that are designed for pumpkin carving are less likely to cause accidental injury because they require less force.
Make your workspace a clean, dry area- Making jack-o-lanterns can be a messy activity. Pumpkin pulps are slippery, which can cause unwanted accidents. Your carving should be done in an area that is clean, dry, and well lit area. By preparing your carving station, you are creating an injury-free area.
Leave the Carving to the Adults- Let your children draw a pretty pumpkin design and help clean out the guts then leave the rest for you. Carving can be dangerous for kids and cause injuries. When you cut the pumpkin, make sure to cut away from yourself in small, controlled strokes. If you feel your hands are in too much pain from carving, have another adult take over.
