CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

The Signs and Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common, yet painful condition that causes numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hands and fingers.

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway at the base of the hand that houses the median nerve –the nerve that’s responsible for controlling the thumb, the index finger, middle finger, and half of the ring finger. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed at the wrist.

CTS is usually the result of different factors that increase pressure on the median nerve, rather than a problem with the nerve itself. While this disorder can be caused by a number of things, common causes include a congenital predisposition, injury to the wrist, or rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms

With CTS, the symptoms usually start out gradual, often beginning with a tingling sensation. Some common symptoms that you may experience also include numbness and pain.

  • Tingling

A tingling sensation that is similar to when your hand ‘falls asleep’ is common with CTS. The tingling can also be accompanied by numbness –which can be followed by pain. The tingling can also be described as having ‘pins and needles.’

  • Numbness

CTA often causes numbness will most likely be in your hand, forearm, or wrist. The pain or numbness may become worse as you attempt to grip an object or use your hand.

  • Weakness

Weakness in the thumb is a common symptom of CTS.

  • Pain

You might also occasionally experience pain between your forearm and elbow, or in your wrist. In most cases, the symptoms become worse at night and can even cause you to wake up in the middle of the night due to the pain.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention. If CTS is left untreated for too long, serious damage can occur to the median nerve. It’s also important to keep in mind that not all wrist or hand pain is due to CTS.
