HEALTH
Those who suffer from arthritis often dread the winter months. Not only are the roads and walkways slippery, there are still the outdoor chores to do such as shoveling snow. To help you survive the winter months –without getting buried beneath the snow, here are three tips to help make the task of shoveling snow much easier.
Get the Right Tools
Having the right tools can make a big difference when it comes to shoveling snow. Having the right kind of shovel can do wonders. A shovel that is too short can cause you to hunch over, making you work much harder than necessary. Shoveling snow is difficult enough without making it more difficult for yourself! Invest in a shovel is easy to grip and doesn’t put you in an awkward position. You should also try using an aerosol vegetable spray to coat the shovel each time before use, which will help the snow to slide off much easier.
Timing is Everything
There is no need to wait until it stops snowing to start shoveling. While some might view it as pointless –it is actually easier to move a few inches of freshly fallen snow, than trying to plow through it once it’s deeper! You might have to shovel twice instead of once, but it can save your joints and your back.
Try a Different Technique
Who said you had to lift the shovel to move the snow? Consider pushing the snow off to the side instead of lifting and moving heavy snow. If you must lift –do so with care, bending your knees and not your back. You should also avoid lifting heavy loads. Carry the snow to where you wish to dump it instead of flinging it over your shoulder and causing unnecessary strain to your joints.
Finally, try to stay warm and take breaks often –never push yourself to the point of exhaustion. Remember there’s no need to rush it, so work at your own pace and know when to call it a day.
